Legal Term for Censure

Robert Torricelli (D-NJ) was convicted in 2002 of agreeing and failing to report illegal gifts and cash payments from a businessman. The businessman got the senator`s help in lobbying the government. Although Torricelli denied the allegations, his colleagues found the evidence convincing enough to “seriously reprimand” him. Although this complaint was not described as “censorship”, it clearly had the same effect. Torricelli, who was running for re-election, saw his popularity plummet within weeks, and on September 30, 2002, he withdrew from the race. Since censorship is not explicitly mentioned as an accepted form of reprimand, many non-confidence prosecutions against members of Congress can be officially listed as a reprimand, conviction, or denunciation. However, the end result is the same, and in all respects these are censorship measures. At the same time, every Zensurfall is different, and those who hand over censorship like to have enough leeway to adjust gravity. Yet the prospect of an open and public rebuke by his peers is painful for even the thickest politician. Still, Bergé insisted that he not excessively interfere or censor the film in any way.

To date, Andrew Jackson is the only sitting president of the United States to have been successfully censored, although his censorship was later removed from official documents,[19] and James K. Polk was also censored by the House of Representatives in 1848. Opposition parties should boycott the debate in the House, meaning that laws passed by the DPJ-controlled House of Representatives cannot be passed. Riel was criticized by Parliament for his role in the Red River Rebellion and arrested on March 16. He was expelled from Parliament in 1874. [11] Perhaps the most notorious Zensurfall was the conviction of Senator Joseph R. McCarthy (R-WI) in 1954. McCarthy entered the national scene at the height of the anti-communist movement after World War II. McCarthy spent several years claiming that well-known communists had infiltrated the U.S. government, and although he never provided evidence to support a single claim, his crusade was popular and powerful. Many Americans from all walks of life saw their lives destroyed in the early 1950s by baseless accusations of communist sympathies.

His power became unchecked, McCarthy became even more relentless, and in 1954 he openly attacked members of the Eisenhower administration in televised hearings. His colleagues realized they had no choice but to act. A committee of no confidence was formed and McCarthy accused its members of being communists. The vote to condemn McCarthy was approved on December 2, 1954 by a vote of 65 to 22. On December 2, 1954, Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin was convicted by the United States Senate for failing to cooperate with the subcommittee investigating him and for insulting the committee recommending its censorship. The motion of censure is a main motion that expresses strong disapproval that could be discussed by the Assembly and adopted by a majority.
