Legal Aid Ontario Pay Scale

The manual is a simple interpretation of legal aid and tariff policies, procedures and rules. It is intended for lawyers (and their staff) who already sit on a legal aid organization and/or lawyers in the private sector. Community legal clinics are independent, not-for-profit corporations funded by LAO to provide justice services for people living in poverty. They are governed by an independent Board of Directors representing the community they serve. The Legal Aid Tariff is a regulation on the remuneration of lawyers who provide services to low-income clients. It sets hourly rates and also sets the maximum number of hours Legal Aid Ontario pays a lawyer for certain types of proceedings. In addition, they earn an average bonus of $6,156. Salary estimates are based on wage survey data collected directly from employers and anonymous workers in Canada.

An entry-level legal aid lawyer (1 to 3 years of experience) earns an average salary of $85,029. On the other hand, a senior legal aid lawyer (8+ years of experience) earns an average salary of $151,121. DVCLS is looking for a junior to intermediate level lawyer to join our employment team of two additional lawyers employed on a permanent full-time basis. The nominee will primarily provide legal advice and represent tenants before the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, the Social Security Tribunal and the Small Claims Court. Regular work may also take place at the following organizations: the Tax Court of Canada, the Supreme Court, the Canada Industrial Relations Board, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal. The legal aid tariff reflects the fees usually paid by a client of modest means. These fees apply to all legal aid, except in exceptional cases. The province provides funding and other support through Legal Aid Ontario, while private lawyers contribute to legal aid by accepting legal aid rates and client legal services rates.

The candidate will also work with DVCLS community partners to deliver public legal education seminars and workshops, participate in legislative reform initiatives and draft policy submissions, develop community development projects for our community and work on regular intentions/entings for the Supreme Court of Canada. Don Valley Community Legal Services (“DVCLS”) is a community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario. DVCLS provides free clinical legal services to people with modest incomes in the following areas of law: housing, immigration and refugees, employment and human rights, and income support. Lawyers must be part of the complex case rate panel to receive this rate. The advance tariff approvals are the result of feedback made by private lawyers during LAO`s province-wide consultations on discretion. They take into account the amount of time that criminal and family lawyers actually spend in court. In the past, lawyers have regularly sought discretion in these proceedings to compensate for limited fare hours.
